South African referee, Akohona Makalima, is on the brink of making history as she is poised to become the first woman ever to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Confederation of Africans (CAF) has shortlisted Makalima as one of the referees for the upcoming 2023 AFCON finals, marking a significant milestone in her career. At 35 years old, she stands out as one of the most prominent women’s referees in Africa.
Makalima has been on the FIFA list since 2014, showcasing her prowess and expertise in officiating football matches at an international level. Her commendable contributions also extend to the global stage, as she was part of FIFA’s officiating team during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Beyond her achievements in football, Makalima holds a national diploma in human resource management from King Hintsa FET College, highlighting her commitment to both her professional and educational pursuits.
