The Senate has issued summons to Security Chiefs in response to the Christmas Eve attacks on Plateau communities.
The disturbing incident unfolded on December 23, 2023, escalating on the 24th as residents geared up for Christmas festivities. The attacks resulted in the widespread destruction of homes and the plundering of properties.
Security Chiefs summoned include Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff, Hassan Abubakar; Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi; and Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Senator Diiket Plang, representing Plateau Central, raised the issue during Saturday’s Senate session, prompting the upper legislative chamber to unanimously agree on calling the security chiefs to testify.
Expressing his dismay over the attacks and the consequent displacement of numerous residents, Plang moved the motion. Senator Titus Zam, representing Benue north-west, joined the discussion, expressing concern about the apparent lack of a comprehensive understanding of the country’s security situation by the service chiefs.
