The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action in response to the escalating security concerns in Plateau State, announcing the formation of a Special Operation Squad.
This strategic move was disclosed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, during a visit to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House in Jos on Friday.
As part of an intensified security approach to counter the persistent attacks, Egbetokun revealed plans to deploy a tactical unit to the state. Stressing the gravity of the situation, he stated, “More deployment of our tactical unit will be made. We are deploying our tactical unit to assist you; we are deploying our intelligence unit. When you see the IGP visiting with DIG operations and DIG intelligence accompanied by the DIG of the zone, you should know that we mean business.”
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Egbetokun announced the immediate commencement of a special operation on the plateau, which would serve as the core of their special intervention squad. Notably, Plateau State is one of the ten pilot states selected for the establishment of such squads.
Appealing for the collaboration of the local populace in the fight against criminal elements, Egbetokun emphasized the need for a collective effort. He urged the people of Plateau to perceive the struggle not as an ethnic or tribal conflict but as a united front against criminals threatening the safety and security of the state.
The IGP’s visit to Plateau State is part of a comprehensive assessment of the security landscape, with a primary focus on securing and protecting areas recently affected by attacks. The region has witnessed severe incidents, including an attack on Christmas Eve resulting in a significant loss of life and property damage. Another attack occurred in the Bokkos Local Government area on Thursday night, underscoring the urgency of enhanced security measures.
