In an unusual turn of events, Niger State Governor Umar Bago vehemently denied allegations circulating in reports that he had imposed a ban on alcoholic drinks in the state. In an official statement from Abuja on Thursday, Bago categorically stated that neither he nor his aides had issued such a directive.
Dismissing the claims originating from social media and blogs, Bago emphasized that he had not given any order prohibiting the sale of alcohol in the state, particularly in nine local government areas, including Suleja, as alleged in the reports. Notably, the governor clarified that the Liquor and Licensing Board, the entity responsible for such decisions, has yet to be constituted under his administration.
Expressing concern over an individual, purportedly named Mohammed Ibrahim, falsely assuming the role of Secretary of the board and making unauthorized proclamations, Bago instructed security agents to apprehend this imposter and investigate the motives behind the misleading statements.
In urging the public and the media to disregard these unfounded claims, Bago emphasized the importance of seeking clarification from recognized government officials. He underscored that any inquiries regarding state policies should be directed to authorized representatives to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
