Osun Governor Adeleke Declares War on Film Piracy, Promises Prosecution

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, issued a resolute warning against film piracy within the state, emphasizing that stringent legal actions leading to imprisonment await any perpetrators caught.

The governor conveyed this message during a courtesy visit by a delegation of Nollywood stars in Osogbo, where he was presented with the hosting rights for the 2023 edition of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards.

Governor Adeleke underscored his administration’s commitment to combatting piracy, stressing that Osun would not harbor those involved in such illicit activities. He acknowledged the profound impact of the entertainment industry in Nigeria and asserted that piracy must be eradicated to ensure the rightful recognition and reward for filmmakers’ hard work.

Discussing the significance of the entertainment industry, Adeleke revealed his dream of implementing robust policies based on his experiences studying and living in the U.S. He expressed a desire for a thriving entertainment sector in Osun.

Seun Oloketuyi, Founder and Convener of BON, conveyed appreciation to the governor for hosting the awards ceremony, urging the government to leverage the entertainment industry for societal enlightenment. Oloketuyi highlighted the potential of the film industry as a powerful tool for showcasing Nigeria globally.

In addition to recognizing various award categories, organizers revealed plans to bestow a Lifetime Achievement Award upon Adebayo Salami for his invaluable contributions to Nollywood. Oloketuyi praised Salami’s foundational role in shaping the industry and serving as an ongoing source of inspiration for current and emerging talents.

The BON Awards is scheduled to take place on December 22 in Osogbo, Osun, marking a significant event in the state’s commitment to supporting and honoring the Nigerian film industry.
