In a notable address at the 2nd NUJ Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria, the Minister of Information and National Orientation extended a call for support from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).Â
The appeal comes ahead of the government’s groundbreaking initiative to introduce a Charter on Citizen Code, aimed at defining and upholding core values that unite Nigerians while respecting the nation’s rich socio-cultural diversities.
The Minister, represented by the Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, shared insights into the forthcoming Charter. Emphasizing its significance, he expressed the government’s commitment to instilling a balanced understanding of citizens’ rights and responsibilities in all Nigerians.
The Charter, scheduled for unveiling early next year, comprises a Nigerian Promise and Citizen Codes, acknowledging the ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversities within the nation. A committee of renowned experts has been assembled to finalize this Values Charter, with a two-week deadline to submit its report.
The Minister highlighted the pivotal role of the media in shaping public perception and urged journalists to lend their support to this mission. He underscored the essential role of media professionals in fostering understanding and acceptance of the Charter’s principles among the Nigerian populace.
During the event, the Minister commended the NUJ’s leadership for recognizing the invaluable contributions of media icons to the nation’s development. Expressing gratitude for being appointed as the chairman of the event, he lauded industry stalwarts, including Mr. Ray Ekpu, Chief Henry Odukomaiya, Dr. Danladi Bako, and Aremo Taiwo Alimi, for their groundbreaking achievements.
Calling on the media to emulate the attributes of these honored icons, the Minister stressed the importance of accountability journalism. He urged media professionals to hold governments, politicians, and leaders accountable while actively reporting on progress and development.
The Minister provided insights into ongoing reforms in areas such as petrol subsidy, foreign exchange, social welfare expansion, MSME support, tax reforms, food security, and transportation palliatives since President Tinubu assumed office.
As Nigeria prepares for a significant step in defining its national values, the Minister highlighted the collective responsibility of media professionals in communicating and amplifying this transformative initiative to the nation.
