Nigeria’s Federal Government has given the green light for the recruitment of 200 medical and clinical professionals at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, situated in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
This strategic move is geared towards fortifying healthcare services, as evidenced by a formal letter from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation addressed to the FMC’s medical director.
This approval reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to reinforcing the healthcare system, specifically addressing the departure of health professionals who have migrated abroad from the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta. This medical facility, serving Ogun State and surrounding regions, holds a critical role in providing essential medical services to residents.
The recruitment initiative empowers the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) to onboard 100 medical staff under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, along with 50 nursing officers and 50 nursing superintendents under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure.
This strategic hiring plan is poised to significantly enhance the medical center’s capabilities, ensuring its sustained capacity to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the community.
Segun Orisajor, the spokesperson for the medical center, has officially confirmed the legitimacy of the letter. He emphasized that the recruitment of new doctors and nurses is a proactive measure to address staffing shortages attributed to the so-called “Japa syndrome.”
Dr. Jimoh Saheed, Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, highlighted the substantial impact of this phenomenon, noting that the FMC in Abeokuta has lost around 50 consultants and 150 resident doctors to the Japa syndrome.
