The Senate has issued a call to the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC), urging them to prioritize addressing the accommodation challenges faced by female students on campuses as a preventive measure against abductions.
This decision, reached on Thursday, aligns with the Senate’s commitment to expressing solidarity with Nigerian women during this year’s Sixteen Days of Advocacy for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
In addition to this, the lawmakers have directed the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen the prosecution process for individuals involved in gender-based violence. The aim is to streamline the legal proceedings and increase the likelihood of securing convictions in such cases.
The Senate has also taken the stance that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) should conduct a continuous review of existing policies and laws pertaining to gender-based violence. This initiative seeks to integrate best practices and strategic approaches, ensuring a comprehensive and effective response to the pressing issue.
