Afrobeat’s luminaries Burna Boy and Rema clinched top honours at the inaugural Afrobeat’s categories during the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, November 19.
Burna Boy secured the prestigious Top Afrobeat’s Artiste award, triumphing over formidable contenders like Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian sensation Libianca. This marked a historic moment as Burna Boy became the inaugural winner of the newly-established category.
Meanwhile, Rema’s remix of ‘Calm Down,’ featuring Selena Gomez, emerged victorious in the Top Afrobeat’s Song category, outshining other notable tracks. Although the ‘Calm Down’ remix didn’t scoop awards in other categories, both artists celebrated their significant achievements at the prestigious Billboard Music Awards.
The night’s top winners included American singer Morgan Wallen with 11 awards, closely followed by Taylor Swift with 10 wins.
