In a significant move, the federal government has introduced updated mining guidelines designed to facilitate the formulation of Community Development Agreements (CDAs) within the solid minerals sector.
The launch ceremony, led by the Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dr. Dele Alake, took place in Abuja at an event jointly organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development (Centre LSD), the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development, and the Ford Foundation.
Minister Alake underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that host communities reap optimal benefits from mining operations, contributing to both local and national economic development.
The Community Development Agreement (CDA) serves as a legal framework ensuring the transfer of socio-economic benefits to mining host communities, outlining mutual obligations between the Mineral Title Holder (MTH) and the host community.
Emphasizing the profound impact of mineral resource mining on host communities, the minister highlighted the imperative of actively involving concerned communities in the sector’s activities.
The revised guidelines aim to strengthen the framework for fostering mutually beneficial relationships between mining stakeholders and host communities.
