National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu revealed on Wednesday that a comprehensive investigation has been launched into the assault on Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Providing an update, the NSA confirmed that several individuals linked to the November 1, 2023, incident in Owerri, Imo State, have been apprehended.
The NLC initiated a nationwide strike on Tuesday, seeking justice for Ajaero, who was attacked while preparing to lead a protest against alleged anti-labor practices by the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led administration.
In the wake of the assault and ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship poll in Imo State, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, took action by redeploying Mohammed Barde, the Commissioner of Police during the incident, and ordering a thorough investigation into the attack on the NLC leader.
Expressing doubt about the IGP’s inquiry, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, called on the NSA to lead the investigation. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program, Osifo voiced concerns about the perceived compromise of the IGP in this matter.
Responding to Osifo’s remarks, the NSA, through a statement from the Head of Strategic Communication in the NSA Office, Zakari Mijinyawa, conveyed deep concern over the incident. Ribadu expressed regret for the assault on Ajaero, condemning it as a breach of the rule of law and the principles of freedom of association and expression endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.
The NSA underscored the government’s unwavering stance against such acts, directing relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation that has already resulted in some arrests. The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon completion. The statement also appealed to the labor leadership to conclude the ongoing strike and allow the dialogue process to proceed to its conclusion.
