The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to media reports alleging tampering with accredited voter figures in the Kogi Governorship Election results on the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

According to a statement by National Commissioner and Member of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, these reports are baseless.

Haruna clarified that the most accurate and current Voters’ Accreditation Data resides in the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), utilized for authentication and accreditation of registered voters on election day. BVAS operates primarily offline for efficient voter authentication, automatically retaining accreditation data.

However, data exportation to the Accreditation Backend System (ABS) occurs when the device is active and connected to the internet.

He likened the process to sending an SMS where connectivity influences the speed of data delivery. At the end of the poll, Presiding Officers press the exportation button on BVAS, initiating synchronization. Changes in accreditation figures may occur as more data is updated in the ABS.

Haruna emphasized that BVAS data cannot be altered after the poll’s closure, and the caveat on the IReV portal reflects ongoing updates.

The statement urged the public to disregard the misleading reports and misinformation.
