The Lagos State Government has decided to end the 50% discount on public transport fares, which was introduced in response to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive on August 2, 2023.
In a public notice released on Saturday, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced a return to the previous transportation rates starting from November 5.
As per the statement from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the 50% fare reduction for regulated transport systems in Lagos would conclude on Sunday. The statement also informed commuters that, commencing on Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fares would revert to the rates that were in place before August 2, 2023.
Lagos residents were urged to take note of this change and make necessary preparations for the resumption of the previous transportation fare rates. Governor Sanwo-Olu had initially announced the fare reductions for state-owned buses by 50% and commercial yellow buses by 25% on all routes, with the goal of mitigating the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.
This reduction was set to go into effect on August 2, 2023, along with an expansion of staff bus fleets to support Lagos State Public Service workers in light of the subsidy removal.
