The house of representatives reached a significant resolution on Wednesday, prompted by a motion presented by Honourable Dominic Okafor.
This motion drew the attention of lawmakers to the considerable expenditure of 200 billion naira allocated to the ongoing census efforts.
However, a contentious debate arose among the lawmakers regarding the feasibility of conducting the census this year, primarily due to heightened concerns about the prevailing security challenges.
In response to these concerns, President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census. Originally scheduled to take place from May 3 to 7, the new date for the census will now be determined by the incoming administration.
It is noteworthy that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, had previously announced the indefinite postponement of the population and housing census in April. This decision followed discussions with select members of the Federal Executive Council, as well as consultations with the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, and his team.
