Electricity workers at the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) took decisive action on Monday, shutting down operations due to the alleged failure to remit their pension deductions for the past 72 months.
These workers, united under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), have made it clear that they will only resume work once the outstanding pension contributions are confirmed and paid. Ado Ririwai, the North-West chairman of the union, expressed their determination to put an end to such practices.
He accused KEDCO of victimizing union leaders who have been advocating for the rights of the workers, describing this behavior as authoritarian. Ririwai emphasized the workers’ legitimate right to stand up for what is rightfully theirs. Furthermore, he alleged that the company had failed to provide essential medical care to its workers, despite the inherent occupational hazards they face.
