Wayne Rooney has officially become the new head coach for the Championship club on a contract spanning three and a half years.
His appointment comes following the dismissal of former head coach John Eustace, who served in that role for 15 months before being let go.
This significant change in management marks the first strategic decision made by Birmingham City’s new American owners, Shelby Companies Limited, who assumed control of the club in July.
Rooney’s coaching team will include his former England teammate and current England Under-21 assistant, Ashley Cole, and John O’Shea, who serves as the assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland’s men’s national team. The backroom staff will also feature Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth, who previously collaborated with Rooney at DC United.
This marks Rooney’s third managerial position, following his time at the MLS club and Derby County. His managerial debut will be at the match against Middlesbrough scheduled for October 21.
Tom Wagner, Blues co-owner and chairman, commended Rooney’s innate winning mentality and expressed optimism that, with the support of his coaching staff, the club, and its fans, he will steer Birmingham City towards new heights.
Wagner emphasized the alignment of Rooney’s coaching philosophy with the club’s aspirations and confirmed the full backing of the board and the entire football club.
