An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck western Afghanistan, causing at least 15 fatalities and injuring 78 people, according to officials.
The earthquake, which occurred around 40km from Herat, a city in western Afghanistan near the Iranian border, was followed by several powerful aftershocks.
Numerous buildings sustained damage, trapping individuals under debris. In Herat, residents reported buildings shaking, plaster falling, and walls cracking.
The city’s main hospital treated over 70 injured individuals. Afghanistan, situated near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, experiences frequent earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
