Nigeria experienced extensive power outages due to a “complete system failure,” according to reports from electricity distribution companies.
The electricity generation dropped to zero megawatts early on Thursday, with only a small fraction of normal power consumption being restored in the country with the highest population in Africa.
Nigeria frequently faces inconsistent power supply despite being a significant oil and gas producer, leading many businesses and affluent individuals to rely on generators for electricity. The country’s power grid collapsed multiple times in 2022, often attributed to technical issues.
Although Nigeria has the potential to produce up to 12,500MW of power, it typically generates only a quarter of that amount. On Thursday, power levels increased from zero to 273MW by approximately 10:30 am, still significantly below the average daily production of 4,100MW.
