Kano State government has defended its allocation of N854 million for mass weddings, citing it as part of their broader efforts to assist vulnerable residents.Â
According to the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, while speaking on Trust TV’s Daybreak program, the mass wedding initiative fulfills both a campaign promise and serves as a form of palliative aid during challenging times.
Bichi explained that the program aims to alleviate the financial burden on families who struggle to arrange marriages for their daughters due to limited income. This initiative also seeks to curb social issues that contribute to poverty.
However, some residents have questioned the allocation of such a substantial amount for weddings, suggesting that direct empowerment might be a more effective approach.
Bichi also raised concerns about the equitable distribution of relief items in the state, taking into account its significant population.
