The Federal Government has identified a range of challenges afflicting Nigeria’s higher education sector.Â
These include inadequate funding, corruption, infrastructure deficiencies, faculty shortages, frequent strikes, brain drain, limited research, weak governance, and security issues.
Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman called for a comprehensive overhaul of the higher education system to bring it in line with global standards.
He made these remarks at the 8th Libsense Open Science Symposium, themed ‘Advancing Open Science and Collaboration: The Role of Stakeholders,’ held in Abuja.
The event, organized by the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) in partnership with the West and Central African Research Education Network and others, aimed to promote open science and research collaboration.
The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing the education budget to 25% and encouraged stakeholders to provide high-quality recommendations for improving the country’s education sector.
CVCNU Secretary-General Prof. Yakubu Ochefu highlighted the need for innovative approaches to address the country’s scientific future and promote research development and collaboration opportunities.
