Rescue teams in Morocco are actively searching for survivors following a powerful earthquake that struck on Friday. The earthquake has claimed the lives of over 2,000 people, marking it as the deadliest quake the country has experienced in years.

The most severe damage and devastation have been observed in remote mountainous regions that are challenging to reach. Local residents have reported extensive destruction in entire villages, and efforts to recover bodies from the rubble have proven difficult for rescuers.

In response to the tragedy, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has declared a period of mourning lasting three days and instructed mosques across the nation to conduct funeral prayers at noon on Sunday.

In Marrakech, a renowned and historically significant tourist city, many residents have chosen to spend a second night sleeping outdoors due to concerns about returning to their homes. The city’s ancient walls, originally constructed in the early 12th century, have also suffered damage as a result of the earthquake.
