History is about to be made in the 2024 election in Mexico, with both the incumbent ruling coalition and the opposition putting forward female candidates for the presidency.
The ruling party, represented by the three-party coalition National Regeneration Movement (Morena), has officially chosen Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, as its candidate for the June 2 election.
Meanwhile, the centrist opposition alliance, known as Frente Amplio por México (Broad Front for Mexico), has nominated Xóchitl Gálvez, a senator and computer engineer, to run as its candidate.
Claudia Sheinbaum secured her party’s nomination after a competitive selection process that included five other contenders. Notably, one of her rivals, former foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, raised concerns about irregularities during the nomination process, alleging an unfair procedure.
It’s significant to mention that Claudia Sheinbaum enjoys a close relationship with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is ineligible for re-election after serving six years in office.
