The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has expressed concern over a rise in the smuggling of rice and illicit drugs across certain national borders.
He stressed the urgency of addressing this issue to safeguard the country. Mr. Adeniyi made these remarks during an interactive session with officers and personnel of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, part of his working visit to Kaduna.
He specifically highlighted the need for effective border control, particularly along the border with Niger Republic, emphasizing that no unauthorized activities should occur in light of the ongoing sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He reiterated that ECOWAS had not altered its position regarding the border closure with Niger Republic. Mr. Adeniyi urged the officers to exercise vigilance in their border duties, reminding them that they are being closely monitored. He warned that anyone caught participating in smuggling activities would face consequences, as it falls within their duty to ensure the complete border closure in their jurisdiction.
Mr. Adeniyi also pointed out a troubling surge in the smuggling of rice, narcotics, and even attempts to smuggle firearms by unscrupulous individuals. He stressed the importance of adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward rice smuggling, as it impacts both the country’s food security and its currency stability. He emphasized the necessity of promoting local rice production to enhance food security.
Furthermore, the CG encouraged FOU Zone B officers and personnel to build strong relationships with communities in border areas to discourage smuggling activities. He mentioned that two months ago, they had revised their operational strategies to improve the effectiveness of their missions.
Mr. Adeniyi commended the Comptroller of FOU Zone B, along with the officers and personnel, for their commendable record of seizures during his tenure. He also shared plans to upgrade infrastructure at FOU Zone B for the comfort of their personnel and stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism in their duties.
Regarding the upcoming promotion exams within the service, Mr. Adeniyi advised participants not to rely on favoritism but to excel through hard work, as promotions would be based on merit.
