The Federal Government has stated that it has not yet found a suitable successor to carry on the legacy of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, who played a pivotal role in designing the Nigerian flag.
Akinkunmi, a native of Ogun State, created the iconic flag while studying abroad in the lead-up to Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
His recent passing in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, prompted a visit from a Federal Government delegation, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris.
During the visit, Idris expressed the government’s profound appreciation for the significant contributions made by the late Akinkunmi to the nation.
Idris noted that, “We are here to console the family on behalf of Mr President. Pa Akinkunmi’s role cannot be forgotten. It is a symbol that we have yet to find a replacement for. He designed it when he was in his 20s, and he lived for more than 60 years after he designed it. Mr President received the news of his death. We want to identify with the family and the people of Oyo State.
“We came to tell them that the Federal Government identifies with them and the people of Oyo State and to say that the Nigerian government will stand by them.”
Speaking on behalf of the family, Remi Akinkunmi extended their gratitude to the delegation and expressed their appreciation for the visit.
