The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued an immediate directive to the State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit to halt the ongoing demolition of houses in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State. This decision was prompted by a ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ raised by Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, who reported that a team, including policemen, had entered the area and demolished structures beyond just shanties.

The demolition impacted various areas including Omolabake, Gandonu, and Coker Estate, resulting in the loss of buildings, property, and livelihood for over 300 individuals. Following an investigation, it was revealed that the Ministry of the Environment and the Police Taskforce, led by CSP Jejeloye, were responsible. In response, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed a letter to be written to CSP Jejeloye and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment, urging an immediate halt to the demolition. Additionally, a five-member ad-hoc committee was formed to investigate the matter and report back to the House within two weeks.
