The Nigerian Senate has officially rejected President Bola Tinubu’s appeal to deploy Nigerian troops to Niger Republic for reinstating democratic governance. Instead, the upper legislative chamber has advised both Mr. Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which he is the leader, to seek a political resolution to the crisis.
This decision aligns with a prior report that Senators were against a military intervention in Niger. President Tinubu had requested permission from the Senate to mobilize the Nigerian Army to address the situation in Niger Republic after a coup led to the removal of their elected president, Mohammed Bazoum. Following closed-session deliberations, the Senate supported alternative actions taken by Nigeria and ECOWAS to reverse the coup, but rejected the notion of military involvement in the impoverished West African nation.
