Nigerian Police Warn Against Violence During Planned Protests by NLC and TUC

In anticipation of the upcoming national protest action organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, the Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a warning against any potential outbreak of violence, which might be exploited by hoodlums.

The caution is based on previous negative experiences of such protests in major cosmopolitan cities across the country.

In an official statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Uyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the Inspector General’s deep concern about the planned nationwide protests.

While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest as protected by the Constitution, the Inspector General urged all parties involved to ensure the demonstrations are conducted peacefully, preventing any hijacking by miscreants.

Recognizing the grievances raised by the labor unions, the Inspector General emphasized the significance of constructive dialogue in addressing the issues at hand. As a result, he ordered the Commissioners of Police and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to engage in fruitful discussions with the leadership of NLC and TUC to find common ground on the planned protests.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during the protest period and assured that all necessary measures to facilitate peaceful conduct have been put in place. However, any attempt by miscreants to exploit the situation for violence, vandalism, gangsterism, or extortion will be met with a firm, professional, and lawful response.

The Inspector General called on all officers to be vigilant, professional, and uphold the highest standards of conduct during this period. He also appealed to all stakeholders, including NLC, TUC, and civil society groups, to embrace peaceful dialogue as the most effective means of resolving grievances.

The Police are committed to providing a secure and conducive environment for open dialogue, constructive engagement, and mutual understanding to ensure the peaceful exercise of civil rights.
