The Kaduna State Government has confirmed a concerning escalation in the diphtheria outbreak, with the death toll rising to 17 and 68 suspected cases reported throughout the state as of Sunday.

Among the recorded deaths, 14 have tragically occurred in the Kafanchan area of Jema’a Local Government Area (LGA), while three fatalities have been documented in Makarfi LGA.

Providing insight into the current situation, Dr. Jeremiah Daikwo, the Chief Epidemiologist of the state Ministry of Health, shared that 20 collected samples were sent for analysis, and their results are eagerly awaited. Meanwhile, 48 cases remain under observation, with patients reportedly in stable condition.

Dr. Daikwo further detailed the distribution of active cases, revealing that 12 patients are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Makarfi, while 35 are being cared for at the Kafanchan General Hospital. Additionally, one patient is receiving medical attention at the Kubau Primary Health Centre.

The outbreak’s index case was traced back to a four-year-old boy, whose illness was first detected in Jema’a LGA on July 4.

In response to this alarming situation, the Ministry of Health has taken proactive measures to contain the spread of the disease. These include intensifying efforts to trace contacts of active cases, implementing risk communication activities, and ensuring prompt management of affected individuals by transferring them to appropriate health facilities.

Furthermore, the ministry has significantly heightened surveillance activities across all 23 Local Government Areas in the state.

Additionally, risk communication initiatives, such as conducting compound meetings and engaging with household heads and community leaders, have been further strengthened to raise awareness and promote preventive measures.
