The Bauchi State Government has taken action against six traditional rulers for their involvement in partisan activities during the 2023 General Election. One of those dismissed is the brother of an Emir, who allegedly went against the government’s political interests during the elections. These rulers belong to the Bauchi and Katagum Emirate Councils, the two leading Emirates in the state.
The Emir of Bauchi serves as the Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, with the Emir of Katagum as the Deputy Chairman.
According to a statement signed by the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Nasiru Ibrahim Dewu, on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, those affected include Alhaji Aminu Muhammad Malami, District Head of Udubo; Alhaji Bashir Kabir Umar, District Head of Azare; Umar Omar, Village Head of Gadiya; and Umar Bani, Village Head of Tarmasuwa, all from the Katagum Emirate Council.
Similarly, from the Bauchi Emirate Council, Bello Suleman, Village Head of Beni, and Alhaji Yusuf Aliyu Badara, Village Head of Badara, have been dismissed.
The statement instructs the affected traditional rulers to hand over their duties to their Secretaries, while the Emirate Councils are to appoint temporary overseeing officers until the Commission appoints substantive officers.
The reasons cited for their dismissal include involvement in partisan politics, misconduct, illegal encroachment on forest reserves and felling of trees, misappropriation of public funds, and insubordination, all of which are in violation of the Public Service Rules.
