Spain and Switzerland cruise to victory in their respective Fifa Women’s World Cup opening match as they beat Costa Rica 3-0 and Philippines 2-0 respectively while Nigeria held Olympic gold winner Canada to a stalemate.

Spain scored all three goals in the first half, courtesy of Valeria del Campo, Aitana Bonmati and Esther Gonzalez to run riot of Costa Rica. Jenifer Hermoso lost a penalty to have made it 4-0

Switzerland gain 2- 0 victory over Philippines with goal from PSG forward Ramona Bachmann and Seraina Piubel making the difference.

10 men Nigeria then hold Olympic gold holder, Canada to a stalemate as star player, Christine Sinclair missed a penalty to give her side the lead and probably a victory.
