The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently opposed the recent surge in petrol pump prices, which now stands at N617 per liter.
Describing the development as unacceptable to Nigerians, the NLC’s head of information and public affairs, Comrade Benson Upah, expressed deep concerns about its adverse impact on the socio-economic well-being of citizens, businesses, and livelihoods.
Addressing reporters, Comrade Upah urged the federal government to backtrack on its path, warning against the potential dangers of fuel prices reaching N1,000 per liter.
The NLC is yet to be convinced of the benefits of this development to the people or the nation’s economy, and they believe it fails to renew hope among the populace.
“The increment is unacceptable to us at the Congress because it poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry, their businesses, incomes, livelihood, everything!” Comrade Upah emphasized.
The NLC firmly advised the government not to leave the national currency entirely to the fluctuations of the market, as such a move could lead to unintended consequences.
The recent pump price hike raises concerns that prices could surge to N1,000 or beyond per liter, creating uncertainties and making life challenging for the populace.
The labor union stressed the importance of reconsidering the current trajectory and cautioned against taking the people’s calmness for granted, as public discontent with the situation remains palpable.
