Football Community Rallies Around Edwin van der Sar as He Battles Brain Injury

Edwin van der Sar, the former goalkeeper of Manchester United and Ajax, is in a “stable but concerning” condition following a brain bleed, as confirmed by his family.

The 52-year-old was admitted to an intensive care unit on Friday and will remain there for the time being, according to a statement issued by Ajax on behalf of his wife. Van der Sar is currently receiving medical treatment in a Croatian hospital, where he was on vacation at the time.

Having retired from playing in 2011 after leaving Manchester United, he joined the Ajax board in 2012 and later assumed the role of the club’s chief executive in 2016. Van der Sar, who earned 130 caps for the Netherlands, enjoyed a successful career, winning four Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League during his time with Manchester United.

His former clubs and teammates have expressed their support and well-wishes for his recovery. Both Ajax and the Van der Sar family have expressed their gratitude for the numerous messages of support they have received.
