The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, is currently convening a meeting with all the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. This marks the first open meeting following the conclusion of the 2023 General Elections.
The primary agenda of the meeting is to conduct a thorough review of the recently concluded general elections held in February. Additionally, preparations for the off-season governorship elections in Kogi and Imo states, scheduled for November this year, will be discussed.
Festus Okoye, the spokesman for INEC, stated that the review process will commence with the gathering of the RECs and will culminate in the commission’s retreat. This practice of holding review meetings after general elections has been a consistent tradition for INEC since 2011.
During the review, all aspects of the electoral activities encompassing the pre-election, election day, and post-election phases will be closely examined. The purpose is to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the electoral process as a whole.
It is important to note that the presidential election conducted on February 25 resulted in the declaration of Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner. However, two main contenders, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have filed legal challenges against INEC’s declaration.
