In a recent ruling, a Jos Magistrates’ Court has handed down a three-month prison sentence to Benjamin Joseph, a 32-year-old bus conductor, for assaulting a police officer.
The presiding Judge, Shawomi Bokkos, conducted a summary trial where Joseph pleaded guilty to the charge, leading to the sentence. Judge Bokkos specified that the punishment would not include an option of a fine, emphasizing its purpose as a deterrent for potential future offenders.
According to the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, the case was reported on June 9 to the “C” Division Police Station by the traffic officer in charge.
Gokwat explained that Joseph was accused of assaulting a police officer who was attempting to intervene and prevent traffic obstruction caused by the convict’s vehicle. The offense falls under the Plateau State Penal Code Law and carries legal consequences.
