Bordeaux’s hopes of promotion from Ligue 2 have been dashed as the French football governing body penalized them with a loss for an abandoned match against Rodez.

The game, which took place on 2 June, was halted when a pitch invader pushed over Rodez goalscorer Lucas Buades.

As a result of the decision by the LFP (French Professional Football League), Bordeaux finished in third place, while Rodez managed to avoid relegation at the expense of Annecy. Bordeaux intends to appeal the ruling to the French Olympic Committee.

Additionally, they have been deducted a point for the next season and are required to close their south stand for four games, with two of those games suspended.

In order to secure promotion, Bordeaux needed to achieve a better result than Metz in the final round of matches, while Rodez was seeking a victory to avoid relegation.

Buades was assaulted while celebrating his goal and had to be carried off on a stretcher due to a concussion injury. Following the incident, the referee decided to abandon the match.

Metz’s 3-2 victory over Bastia secured their promotion, as they finished in second place behind champions Le Havre.
