The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a directive to all its members, urging them to initiate mobilization efforts for a nationwide protest commencing on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
The protest aims to voice opposition to the Federal Government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy. As part of the protest, there will also be a withdrawal of services to ensure workers from all over the country can unite in their demand for the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal.
The organized labour views this action as a significant display of dissent in response to the contentious decision to remove fuel subsidy, which has sparked widespread outrage among the Nigerian population.
Comrade Joe Ajaero, the national president of the NLC, stated during a press conference in Abuja on Friday that the decision to proceed with the protest was made at the emergency national executive meeting of the congress.
Ajaero noted that, “If by next week Wednesday, the NNPCL that illegally announced new price regime in the oil sector refuses to reverse itself for negotiation to continue, that the Nigeria Labour Congress and all its affiliates will withdraw their services and commence protest nationwide until this is complied with.
“NNPCL doesn’t have the monopoly to act illegally even as a private company. The NLC, therefore, directed all state councils and the industrial unions to commence mobilisation from this morning to make sure that this action is in force.”
