After leading the table from the beginning of the season and ending the season with almost nothing, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, has stated that his team has taken significant strides forward this season, regardless of the outcomes of their final two Premier League matches. They are set to face Nottingham Forest, a team in danger of relegation, on Saturday, and a loss would result in Manchester City claiming the title. Despite being seven points ahead at the top of the table on December 26, the Gunners are now four points behind Pep Guardiola’s side.
Arteta emphasized the establishment of a strong foundation and core within the team, comprising talented players, youthful energy, and experienced individuals who provide leadership. He acknowledged the need to continue this development due to the higher demands, expectations, and challenges that lie ahead in the next season.
Arsenal experienced just one league defeat from the beginning of the season until February, securing a comfortable lead. However, a series of draws against Liverpool, West Ham, and Southampton in April, followed by a 4-1 loss to Manchester City, impacted their position.
The Gunners returned to winning ways against Newcastle but suffered a 3-0 defeat at home against Brighton, allowing City to create a significant lead over them. If Arsenal loses to Forest and City win their game against Chelsea, City will be crowned champions. A draw would keep Arsenal in contention mathematically, although City possesses a much better goal difference.
When asked about the season’s progression and if it had been “painful,” Arteta expressed that there were moments to be pleased with, but also acknowledged the pain associated with not meeting expectations and performing below their level. He emphasized using that pain constructively to improve, find solutions, and ultimately achieve more success.
