President Muhammadu Buhari advised the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner, Richard Hugh Montgomery, to uphold the esteemed diplomatic standards of his predecessors by showing respect for Nigeria’s traditional institutions.
The President shared this advice during a reception of Letters of Credence from the UK High Commissioner and the High Commissioner of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka, Velupillai Kananathan, at the State House on Thursday. Buhari emphasized that the relationships with both countries would be strengthened by their consideration for local culture, traditional rulers, and institutions.
According to a statement by Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari discussed with the UK High Commissioner how Nigeria came close to having its first female governor and highlighted the increasing participation of women in politics and governance over the years.
He assured Montgomery that the longstanding diplomatic relations between the two nations had been built on mutual respect for cultures, promising that all courtesies would be extended to make his stay in Nigeria memorable.
Montgomery, in his response, conveyed the United Kingdom’s deep regard for Nigeria and its cultural institutions. He also extended best wishes from King Charles III as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming handover ceremony on May 29th.
