Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky embarked on a diplomatic tour that included meetings with Pope Francis and Italy’s Prime Minister. He was also scheduled to visit Germany. The German government recently announced a new weapons package worth 2.7 billion euros for Ukraine, in anticipation of a potential Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Zelensky expressed his gratitude for Italy’s support and discussed the ongoing conflict with Russia, citing fresh aggressions by the country. Despite Italy’s previous close ties with Russia, the country has shown strong support for Ukraine, providing aid and weapons and supporting sanctions against Russia.
During his meeting with Pope Francis, Zelensky expressed his honor at meeting the pontiff and discussed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While Pope Francis has previously offered to mediate in the conflict, his efforts have not yet yielded any tangible results.
Zelensky noted that, “I have not come to complain, I have come to talk about our cooperation and to thank you once again for helping us, for the sake of our country, because we want peace,”.
