Hudu Yunusa-Ari, a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) who had been suspended in Adamawa State, is now in police custody.

According to a statement by the Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, Ari was arrested on Tuesday by the Police Election Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation Team in Abuja. He is being questioned to determine the motives behind his alleged misconduct during the supplementary elections in Adamawa State.

The Inspector-General of Police has assured the public that everyone involved in the matter will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Ari had earlier stated in a BBC Hausa interview that he would surrender himself to the police. He had been in hiding for two weeks following his controversial announcement of Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission later nullified his decision and declared the incumbent governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party, as the authentic winner of the election.
