The House of Representatives has requested the UK government to show mercy as Senator Ike Ekweremadu is set to be sentenced in the United Kingdom on May 5.
Toby Okechukwu, a member of the House, argued that due to the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the UK, diplomatic interventions should be explored.
Okechukwu also highlighted Ekweremadu’s contributions to the Commonwealth of Nations and his intentions to help his sick daughter. He pleaded for clemency and insisted that Ekweremadu has helped many Nigerians in the past.
The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, also appealed to the UK court to consider Ekweremadu’s history and his lack of prior convictions. He requested that they also take into account the health of Ekweremadu’s daughter, who relies on her parents for care.
In March, Ekweremadu, his wife, and their doctor were convicted of organ trafficking after facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with the intention of exploiting him.
