A tragic accident involving three buses – two yellow “danfo” buses and a government-owned BRT bus – took place near the Ogudu bridge, heading towards the Alapere area of Lagos State on Wednesday.
The collision resulted in the death of an unnamed commercial bus driver and caused significant traffic congestion along the busy route connecting the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The situation worsened as the BRT bus caught fire, adding to the chaos on the road.
Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), blamed the speeding of the buses for the collision during a phone interview with Channels Television. Although the heavy rain worsened the traffic, LASTMA officials and other first responders were quick to arrive at the scene and manage the situation.
While some passengers suffered minor injuries, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and the need to enforce traffic regulations to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), released a statement which partly reads: “Further Investigation revealed that the BRT Bus suddenly lost control them rammed into the commercial bus from behind causing the yellow commuter bus to upturn.
“Unfortunately an adult male (driver) of the bus lost his life to the incident while several others were injured but had been moved to the nearest hospital.
This prompted angry mobs to set the BRT Bus on fire .
“The Agency’s LRT are at the scene alongside Lagos state fire and rescue service , Nigeria Police Force and LASTMA.
“However the body had been bagged by the Agency’s LRT at the scene and handed over the police officer at the scene.
“The burnt carcass had been recovered with the aid of a private tow truck provided by LBSL (Lagos bus service limited) the road is now free for vehicular activities.”
