The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that it plans to contact the Inspector General of Police, Baba Ahmed, regarding an investigation and potential prosecution of Hudu Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State.
This decision was made during a technical meeting in Abuja attended by INEC’s national commissioners on Tuesday. Additionally, INEC intends to write to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, to inform President Muhammadu Buhari about the REC’s actions.
INEC revealed this via their official Twitter handle,
The Tweet reads: “At its meeting today, April 18, 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:
“Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Ari.
“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.
“Detailed official statement will follow shortly.”
Earlier today, the national commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) convened in a closed-door meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
This meeting followed INEC’s directive to Hudu Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Adamawa State, to avoid visiting the commission’s state office in Adamawa, which was issued within 24 hours of the governorship election’s supplementary vote. INEC made this decision due to Ari’s announcement that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Aisha Dahiru (commonly referred to as Binani), had emerged victorious in the election.
