On Tuesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, held a press conference in Abuja, where he disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, had issued a directive. Specifically, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, who was deployed to Adamawa State for election duty, was ordered to withdraw immediately. In his place, the IGP directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of Gombe State, Etim Equa, to proceed to Adamawa State to oversee the security arrangements for the supplementary governorship poll.
Adejobi emphasized that the IG was committed to ensuring that the electoral process was free and fair. Earlier, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had reconvened at the collation centre in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. The area was heavily secured by a significant number of security operatives. Adamu Gujungu, the INEC Administrative Secretary in the state, who had been appointed to replace the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari, was present at the centre.
