Mrs. Ruby Emele, Imo State’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has announced that plans are underway to conduct local council area elections in the state. Speaking with journalists in Owerri on Friday, Emele explained that earlier plans to hold the elections were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EndSARS protests, and security issues in some rural areas of the state. However, the government is now moving forward with preparations, and a date for the elections will be announced soon.
Emele also discussed several other initiatives being undertaken by the state government. One such initiative is the Boundary Disputes Resolution Committee, led by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku, which is working to resolve boundary disputes between neighboring communities. In addition, the government plans to issue certificates of recognition and staffs of office to traditional rulers who have not yet received them.
Emele expressed concern over strained relationships between some Presidents-General and traditional rulers, but noted that the government is working to make the council more active and productive, and to create a favorable environment for private sector growth. Ongoing promotion interviews for staff of local government councils in the state are also part of the government’s efforts to improve efficiency and productivity in the state civil service.
Finally, Emele highlighted the government’s efforts to dredge the Orashi River into an international seaport, which is expected to boost commerce, industrialization, revenue generation, and job creation in the state.
