During a training exercise on Wednesday night in Kentucky, two US Army Black Hawk helicopters crashed, causing “several casualties,” according to officials.

The helicopters belonged to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and went down in Trigg County, which is situated northwest of Fort Campbell. In a statement released early on Thursday, the army base confirmed the incident and mentioned that an investigation is underway.

The 101st Airborne Division acknowledged the accident on Twitter and expressed their focus on the affected soldiers and their families. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear shared on Twitter that fatalities were anticipated, and that emergency management and law enforcement were taking action.

Fort Campbell, which is home to the 101st Airborne Division, will release more details about the incident as they become available. The 101st Airborne Division earned their nickname “Screaming Eagles” after their heroic actions during World War II, particularly in the D-Day landings and the Battle of the Bulge.
