Ike Ekweremadu, a former Deputy Senate President, and his wife, Beatrice, have been found guilty of engaging in organ trafficking in the UK.
A jury has convicted Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obinna Obeta of conspiring to bring a young man to the UK to exploit him for his kidney after a six-week trial. However, Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia, was cleared of the same charge.
The trio was accused of illegally collaborating to bring a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, which was used in an £80,000 private transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in London for Sonia. During the trial, Sonia was seen weeping as the verdict was delivered.
