Prof. Muhammad Abubakar, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, revealed that during the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25, the Federal Government prevented more than 200 cyberattacks.

Abubakar shared this information during the opening session of a two-day ministerial training in Abuja called ‘Positioning the GBB Team for Effective Management and Leadership in the 4th Industrial Revolution.’ The training was aimed at board members and management staff.

Abubakar noted that, “On the election day alone, we were able to block more than 200 attacks and the next day, the attacks geometrically increased to about 1.2 million and all were blocked from our own businesses,”.

A committee for business continuity and cyberspace protection has been established to regulate and safeguard digital activities, while also enhancing the GBB’s technical services.

According to Abubakar, the training intends to review the agency’s performance and explore alternative revenue streams.

Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, served as the facilitator of the training and explained that its purpose was to evaluate and optimize the management and leadership of Galaxy Backbone Limited, in order to increase productivity. Pantami praised the GBB’s approach to developing digital infrastructure, which effectively reduces the cost of governance.

“In this training, I will be very much sincere with you to point out some areas where we need significant improvement.

“Training is key when it comes to improving our performance and at the same time training is key when it comes to our self-evaluation, self-judgement, self-assessment.

“We need to think out of the box to discover new areas for government revenue generation.

“We need to be proactive in our thinking, let us not maintain the same process everyday when it comes to revenue generation,” he said.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the ministry created a committee on February 23rd to protect the country’s cyberspace and Information and Communication Technology infrastructure in preparation for the 2023 general elections.
