The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has decided to halt train services in the country from February 25 to February 27, 2023, to allow citizens to perform their civic duties in the upcoming presidential election. The NRC Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yakub Mahmood, issued a statement on Wednesday listing the routes affected, which include Abuja–Kaduna, Warri–Itakpe, Lagos–Ibadan, and Iddo Lagos-Ijoko train services.
Meanwhile, the NRC has assured the public that train services will resume as usual on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. The NRC has suspended train services in certain areas of the country over the last year due to attacks and derailments.
In March 2022, terrorists attacked a Kaduna-Abuja train, killing some passengers and kidnapping others who were later released. In addition, passengers waiting to board a train in Edo State were abducted on January 7, 2023, but were subsequently freed. The Abuja-Kaduna services were also suspended in January due to a derailment at the Kubwa Station.
