Cash Scarcity: Four die in Edo over shortage of cash protest

Four protesters were reportedly killed on Wednesday when violence erupted in Benin and its surrounds in Edo State over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cash swap programme (CBN).

Those deceased were among the throngs of commercial bank clients attempting to deposit old naira notes at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) branch on Akpakpava Road in Benin.

Two of the dead were young men and women who were shot by police officers in front of the CBN branch on the famed Ring Road.

Police also used tear gas canisters to disperse the encroaching mass of protesters.

One of the demonstrators, who did not want to be identified, informed our reporter in front of CBN that he witnessed the bodies of the four victims, three of whom were hurriedly evacuated by police.
